My Running Shoes

Hope that everyone had a WONDERFUL Christmas celebration! We sure did! Family, friends, good food and the Holidays. What more does one need?

I have a slight addiction to Brooks Adrenaline running shoes. Ever since I started running, Brooks have been my shoe of choice. I started out as a SUPER pronator (ankles rolling inward), so my running store in Louisville fitted me into Brooks Ariels. They sort of look like grandma shoes with brighter colors, no?

Brooks%20Ariel%202010 My Running Shoes(source)

After strengthening my knees and ankles after my first season of cross country in High School, I graduated to the Brooks Adrenaline line. Actually, almost our entire high school girls XC team wore Brooks! I just realized that I’ve been wearing Brooks (both racing and training shoes) since 2004!! Wow!

Here is my current “collection”, one of these pairs does not belong…

brooks thumb My Running Shoes

My knees and back and hips and ankles are SO happy to have received a new pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11’s for Christmas.

Running friends, it’s time to cringe. I haven’t had a new pair of running shoes since the summer of 2009. Daniel bought me a new pair of Brooks before I went to Kenya for 3 months in 2009. Granted, I didn’t run a whole lot in 2009 or 2010, BUT, that was the last time that any new running shoes were on my feet… YIKES

brooks 2 thumb My Running Shoes

Top to Bottom: Brooks 11’s (Christmas 2011), Brooks 8’s (2008 XC season), Brooks 9’s (2009 Track Season), Brooks 8’s (Summer 2009).

The 9’s gave me a TERRIBLE blister on the inside of my arch this past summer (I think I wore the wrong socks), so they’ve been retired for a while even though the tread isn’t too bad…

Then I wore the Brooks 8’s from my 2008 XC season for a while, but I just don’t really like the way that they feel. Weird.

The shoes I’ve been wearing the most often are the shoes that Daniel got me right before I left for Kenya in 2009. I wore them for the Bourbon Chase, and they’re the shoes I’ve been training in for most of the summer and fall. As I mentioned before, not a whole lot of running happened in 2009 and 2010, but I used these shoes for lots of everyday activities as well.

brooks 3 thumb My Running Shoesbrooks 4 thumb My Running Shoes

brooks 14 thumb My Running Shoesbrooks 17 thumb My Running Shoes

Holy moly. I did not realize that I had worn through the rubber on the bottom of my shoe until after my 2011 Turkey Trot race. I think I posted that my right hamstring was acting a little bit funky during the race, and one of the Therapists at work said that I had a minor hamstring pull. How could I NOT have a minor injury with shoes that look like this! (I even wore a hole in the upper of my right shoe)

It was super fun to receive a new pair of running shoes for Christmas, partly because I forgot what the bottom of a shoe SHOULD look like!!!

One more comparison:

brooks 12 thumb1 My Running Shoesbrooks 13 thumb1 My Running Shoesbrooks 14 thumb1 My Running Shoesbrooks 15 thumb1 My Running Shoes

My joints are happy again, and I have a few pairs of shoes to donate! I’ll probably hang on to the pair that is the most worn through for my summer mowing shoes, but the other ones will go to a shoe drive!

One last “bad runner” item that I need to get off of my chest: I’ve been wearing the SAME shoe inserts since I started running. Back in 2004. I’ve never ever bought another pair. Exhibit A:

brooks 20 thumb My Running Shoesbrooks 21 thumb My Running Shoesbrooks 22 thumb My Running Shoes

I think I’ll try running with the inserts that came with this new pair of shoes, but if I don’t like the way they feel, I’ll probably slip in my 6 year old inserts back into my brand new kicks. Maybe next year for Christmas I’ll get a new pair of inserts wlemoticon smile My Running Shoes

Bourbon Chase 2011 Race Recap

In case you missed the first two posts about The Bourbon Chase, you can check out my “Preparation” post and my “Before the Race” post!

A quick intro to The Bourbon Chase: an overnight 200 mile relay race on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. We had a team of 11 courageous runners- The bodyFIT Bootleggers: Adam, Scott, Brock, Grant, Cindi, Jon, Kristen, Ryan, Scott and Emily. Below are the fantastic members of Van 1:abourbonchase 1 of 57 thumb Bourbon Chase 2011 Race Recap

And here are the superstars of Van 2:

abourbonchase 56 of 57 thumb Bourbon Chase 2011 Race RecapEach team is split into two vans, Adam, Scott, Brock, Grant, Cindi and myself were in Van 1, and the rest of the team was in Van 2. The race is a relay-race, so Van 1 members run each of their “legs” of the race, and after the last runner runs his leg of the race, the baton is passed on to Van 2. After the handoff, Van 1 gets to rest while Van 2 completes their legs of the course. Each runner ran a total of 3 legs (except Jon, Grant and Ryan all ran extra legs of the race because we were short one person). Confusing? Not really! There are 36 legs of the course, and each leg varies in distance and in difficulty. You can look back at my “Preparation” post to see the legs of the run that I did! Here’s a map of the entire course:

During our “breaks” from running, we did a lot of this:abourbonchase 12 of 57 thumb Bourbon Chase 2011 Race Recap

Fortunately our team decided to get a hotel room, and we all went back to shower/rest for a little while. Van 2 finished with their legs of the run around 11:30pm, so we met them at the next transition and began our second legs of running. I don’t have any pictures of the night runs, but it was dark, and it got MUCH cooler (it had been 85+ degrees during our first runs, so the cold night air was VERY welcome!) Running at 3:30am is a very bizarre thing, but that was honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole race! And to think that I had been nervous about that run! Van 1 did an AMAZING job on our night runs-the heat from earlier in the day had made our first run pretty difficult, but we definitely redeemed ourselves with the night run! We passed our baton back to Van 2 around 5am on Saturday morning in Davnille and then we headed to our hotel for THE BEST 2 hours of sleep I’ve ever had.

During our quick “nap”, Van 2 did a fantastic job running their second round. We met up again at Four Roses Distillery around 11am on Saturday. Unfortunately, the leg that Cindy ran from Four Roses to the next checkpoint was pretty short, so we didn’t actually get to any bourbon sampling at Four Roses wlemoticon sadsmile Bourbon Chase 2011 Race Recapfour roses shot Bourbon Chase 2011 Race Recap

However, when we left Four Roses, we got to drive through a creek (it was the only way out)! I bet out-of-towners started questioning the sanity of us Kentuckians at that point…

Since I don’t know any of my teammates, I e-mailed them with a short “getting to know you” survey (and yes, I told them it would be posted on the blog) and here are 4 out of our 12 runners:

Bourbon Chase 2011: Preparation

I may be a little bit insane. Just a little bit. But I think all runners are just a little bit insane.

Last week, I started running at 5:30am with a running group called John’s Striders. The weirdest thing? I liked it! Despite 5am wake up and running in complete darkness, I think I’m hooked (we’ll see how it goes when it’s below zero outside). I’m pretty sure I’m the youngest runner in the group, but I haven’t met everyone yet. Anyways, it is GREAT to have a running community again! And I should mention, I have made some of the BEST friends in the world in my 8 years of running!

shoes4 thumb Bourbon Chase 2011: PreparationI miss the team aspect of running, and that shouldn’t surprise me too much because I started out running with a team in high school, and I had my college team. Only after transferring to UK did I have to run alone. Not having a team may have been one of the reasons why I took almost a year off from running.xcgirls thumb Bourbon Chase 2011: PreparationAnyways, this summer was a great time for me to get back into running shape. Was it fun? No. Was it hard? Yes. Do 80+ degree temps suck? Yes. But, I’m thankful for those slow, sticky miles that I put in during the summer months. Fall weather reminds me of cross country season, of long runs on the weekends. The cooler weather makes me feel faster and it definitely allows me to breathe better. The crispness of the air is refreshing when my body finally starts to warm up after the first few minutes of striding along the asphalt. Bourbon Chase 2011: PreparationYeah, I’m in love with running again. So, this weekend, I’m doing what any other normal 17-20mile per week runner would do: I joined a Bourbon Chase team. Bourbon Chase 2011: PreparationThe Bourbon Chase is a 200 mile overnight relay race that takes runners along the scenic pathways of Kentucky. The run starts at the Jim Beam distillery and hits Heaven Hill, Makers Mark, Four Roses, Woodford Reserve, Makers Mark and ends in Lexington. Each team is comprised of 12 runners who run 3 legs of the race. Average mileage per runner: 16.5 miles. As I mentioned before, this is an overnight relay race, so members of each of the 250 teams will be completing their legs of the run in the dark. Pretty exciting, huh?

image thumb Bourbon Chase 2011: PreparationWell, since joining John’s Striders, I’ve heard about The Bourbon Chase and I offered to help any teams that were down a person. Jon from the BodyFit Bootleggers contacted me and I found myself on a team! I have no idea who any of my team mates are, and I’m kind of excited to spend 24+ hours with other crazy runners! We’ll be leaving Lexington on Friday morning, and I’ll be finished sometime on Saturday afternoon. I wish I could go to the huge after party they’re hosting in Lexington for all of the Bourbon Chasers, but I have a very special wedding to attend that evening! Let’s just say, after running 18 miles in under 24 hours, this girl probably won’t be out on the dance floor (I never like dancing).course map Bourbon Chase 2011: Preparation

A Fitness Class Review and Fun Workouts!

Maybe I should stop pretending that Fitness Fridays won’t really happen every Friday. However, I do plan on continuing regularly posting our workout adventures for the week, with the awesome Fitness Friday logo, just because I want to wlemoticon smile A Fitness Class Review and Fun Workouts!

At some point, I’ll get Daniel’s activities on here- I know he went bouldering a couple of times, and the man bikes EVERYWHERE. He also stopped in at the gym that I work at once this week, and he did our Saturday workout as well! I love exercising with my husband! (No more shaggy hair!)

img 0304 thumb1 A Fitness Class Review and Fun Workouts!

  • Sunday: Pure Barre. The gym I work at, Body Structure, is teaming up with Pure Barre to offer packages on Pure Barre Classes and Personal Fitness Training at our gym. My friend Hannah and I decided it would be a good idea to see what Pure Barre is all about so that we would be well-informed to talk about the class with our members! We went on Sunday afternoon to a regular "Pure Barre" class, dressed in Capri pants and barefooted, we got out our equipment: 3lb and 8lb weights, a resistance band, a mat and a small rubber ball. The music was turned up and the instructor started with a quick, heart-pumping warm up. We wasted no time getting to work. (insert quote from Pure Barre website about what Barre is).
  • purebarrelex thumb A Fitness Class Review and Fun Workouts!
  • Since I had just run a 5k the night before, my legs were already pretty tired. We did many reps of each exercise. I’m really not sure how to describe what we did. But I can tell you that it made my legs shake. I can see how some people would really like Pure Barre- I didn’t sweat that much, and I felt like I got in a lot of work in those short 55 minutes.
  • purebarrelex1 thumb A Fitness Class Review and Fun Workouts!
  • However, I don’t think that Pure Barre fit my "exercise style". I like pounding on the pavement, I like being out of breath and moving fast (BodyRock.tv workouts). I like yoga and pilates, but Pure Barre just didn’t do it for me. Now, the women in the class had amazing bodies, but I think the whole thing was just a little too "fancy" and ‘choreographed" for me. I also had a difficult time understanding the postures and placement of my limbs (hello lack of self-awareness), and I know that with time, I would probably learn everything.
  • So who would I recommend this class to? Someone with pretty good flexibility, someone looking for an intense yet manageable workout, and probably someone who had a dance background (as I think they would enjoy it more). I am really glad that I got to have an opportunity to experience what Pure Barre is, but I think I’ll just stick with my running and BodyRocking icon smile A Fitness Class Review and Fun Workouts!

We had fun using some of the playground equipment in our workout. It was great working out with the husband and a friend, I think we all got a pretty good workout because we were pushing one another!

Here’s the circuit (starting with a 5 minute jog to the park):

  • Jump Lunge & Kick Up- 30 Reps
  • Side Burpee Knee Tuck- 30 Reps (15 each leg)
  • Squats- 30 reps
  • Reverse Push Ups- 30 Reps (The guys did 30 Tricep Dips and Pull Ups as I completed my Reverse Push Ups)
  • Jack Jump Tuck- 30 Reps
  • 3D Push Ups- 30 Reps
  • One Leg Jump Up- 15 Reps per leg
  • Ab Chopper- 30 Reps
  • Reverse Crunch- 30 Reps
  • Tricep Pushup- 20 Reps per Side (The guys banged out another set of Triceps Dips and Pull Ups!)
  • Planks- Side Plank Left, Side Plank Right, Center Plank- all 45 seconds each
  • Jog back!

WOW. Awesome workout, we were all pretty darn hungry and sweaty by the time we got home!

RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

midsummer thumb RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5kLast night was the 24th Annual MidSummer Night’s Run, sponsored by Lexington’s very own Central Baptist Hospital. Last night’s race had over 3,700 participants! I think it’s safe to say that we can proudly point out that we’re not ALWAYS the most sedentary city (as pointed out in the June 2011 issue of Men’s Health Magazine- “Where Sit Happens”)

HPI 0816293379W3GdB8U3e RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

The race was at 8:30 pm, and since we live a mere 1.5 miles from Downtown, I decided to run down to the race as a warm-up! Daniel met me downtown on his bike and held onto my race t-shirt as he watched the race! I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before, but Daniel’s knees don’t like running. It’s not runners knee or any other condition that I’ve ever heard of, they just give him SO much pain when he tries to run wlemoticon sadsmile RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

img 0301 thumb RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

Anyways- I am so thankful to have a supportive husband that tells me “YOU CAN DO IT!” I headed down to the race around 8pm, and got a bib and t-shirt. I waited around for Daniel in front of PNC bank and gave him my phone and t-shirt. Vine St. was absolutely overflowing with runners, walkers, strollers and even a few canines. Here’s a map of the 5k course:

midsummer thumb1 RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

Everyone started moving towards the start line around 8:10, and we were packed in like sardines at 8:20. I wanted to make sure I started on the road, I didn’t want to chance stepping off of the sidewalk into a sea of forward-moving people, so I smashed myself in between complete strangers. That’s one of the things I love about running- there’s this instant community that happens. You know that everyone else has the same excitement, and it’s just a neat bond that runners have.

Anyways- the gun went off and I don’t think my section moved for about 30 seconds. I crossed the start pads about a  minute after the gun went off. The first mile was rough- there were SO many people to dodge! I wove in and out of the crowds and finally found a good spot right around mile 1. When I passed the mile 1 marker, I glanced at my watch and it said 7:25 “Oops… I went out WAY too fast. Oh well, I’ll just slow down a bit and see what happens.”

mile 2 RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

I kept trucking along, passing people and wishing I had started closer to the start line. Dodging people is fun and all, but when you’re half way through the race and you’re still trying to weave between people, it’s not as cool. I passed mile 2 at 14:50. “Nice pace, but I’m really starting to feel it. Goal for the last mile: slow down a bit and finish strong”

One of the great things about the course was that it went right by the Fifth Third Pavilion on Main Street, where live music was playing during the race! I don’t run with headphones (I guess it goes back to not being allowed to wear headphones at practice/races during high school and college), but I do like when there is music being played! Anyways- mile 2-3 was hard. It was hot, about 83 degrees, and I was tired from going out too fast. I drenched myself with a cup of water at one of the water stations and told myself to keep going.

I almost wanted to stop to walk, but I didn’t want to have to tell Daniel that I walked, so I kept my feet moving. I crossed the finish line at 23:37! Daniel managed to snap the following picture just a few seconds after finishing:

img 0303 thumb RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

I was pretty happy with my time, considering I haven’t really been doing a whole lot of running lately (read: less than 15 miles per week, this week, this was my ONLY run!) And, I was happy to see that my overall pace was 7:36!

img 0304 thumb RACE RECAP: A MidSummer Night’s Run 5k

I was happy to be finished. I even got to see the wonderful Ashley during the race and at the finish! Hope you found your husband afterwards, Ashley and great job to you both! I also saw my old team mate and friend, Julie at the race. Hi Julie!

The racing bug has bitten, I’m keeping my eyes peeled for another race. I am so thankful that God has blessed me with the ability to run. I had a moment while running down Main Street where I just thanked God for  giving me legs that work, for giving me lungs that breathe, and for giving me the enjoyment I find in running.

Anyways, here are the rest of the stats:

I changed my shirt and hopped onto a garbage truck (it was super clean!) for one final picture of the night! I really wanted a picture because I looked like Christmas, and if you know me, you know how much I love Christmas!

Fitness Fridays!

Hi Friends! I hope your week went as swimmingly as mine! This week, I had a lot of free time, but I had a wonderful time taking it easy because I know next week is going to be slightly crazy!

It’s that time of the week, time for Fitness Friday!

I felt SO GOOD this week during my runs! I retired an old pair of running shoes, and pulled out another pair from the closet that weren’t as worn. Well… these “old but not too old shoes” did something:

run 1 of 1 thumb Fitness Fridays!

I have a huge blister on the inside of my arch. It formed on Wednesday’s run, and on todays run, it busted open. Fortunately, I was at the gym and I had access to bandages. I put on 3 band aids before I started my run, but about half way through, my blister was pretty painful. Then, I put on a super bandage, and wrapped my foot with neoprene. The blister still hurt a lot, but at least I wasn’t getting blister goo and blood everywhere!

I also had another running “injury” this week- I lost a toenail. Gross, I know. So you may think I have all of my little piggies painted orange, but really I just painted a chunk of skin on one of my toesies.

Well folks, that’s all for this week’s edition of Fitness Fridays with the Coopers! Stay tuned for a Post about Squid-Ink Pasta!

Delayed Fitness Friday

Betcha thought I forgot about our weekly Fitness Friday post, but here it is!

I guess technically this is a Fitness Saturday, but I don’t care. Let’s pretend it’s Friday again!

fitnessfriday thumb2 Delayed Fitness Friday

  • Saturday: REST! We played at the pool for a while!
  • Sunday: BodyRock.tv workout- “Marine Corps Workout” (same one as last week, I loved it!) (200 Abs towards weekly total)
  • Monday: 100 Abs and REST!
  • Tuesday: 2 Mile Run Swim- it was SO humid!
  • Wednesday: BodyRock.tv workout- “What’s my Name?” (80 Abs towards weekly total); Started mowing the grass
  • Thursday: 5 Mile Run (on a treadmill because it is BLAZING hot outside!); Finished mowing the grass; Gave Silas a bath with the hose
  • Friday: REST

Miles Run: 7

Abs: 280 (towards my 3,000 in 35 Abs Challenge)

So, not the most exercise filled week, but it still felt great to move! Plus, I am really, REALLY happy that I did a 5 mile run. I’ve been having trouble with getting in more than 4 or 4.5 miles, so heading to the air-conditioned gym was definitely a good decision to get me out of the heat and HUMIDITY. One negative from that run- my legs are still really stiff, I think that my legs just don’t care for the treadmill too much.

That’s all for this week! Hopefully I’ll figure out a way to log some more miles next week- I suppose that might mean a few visits to the treadmill…

And now, a totally unrelated picture…

Fitness Friday!

This is the first post in the series “Fitness Friday”. Each Friday, I hope to recap all of the fun activities throughout the week! Remember when I posted about the 3,000 in 35 Abs Challenge? Well, Fitness Friday posts will track my progress in that challenge, as well as my other weekly exercise activities!

I posed a loose workout plan last Saturday, and here’s what actually went down this week:

ABS Total Week 1: 558

Miles Run: 12.6 mi.

Not too shabby! I had a lot of extra time this week, and it felt really good to do something active every day. Daniel asked last night if we can aim to have one or two days per week where we do something active together, so I’m excited to see what we come up with each week!

Here’s the post for the 3,000 in 35 Abs Challenge: Week 2!

Weekend Schedule for the Coopers:
